Charlotte Region – The Recipient of 2011 Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant

Today, Shelley Poticha, Director for the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), was in Charlotte to announce the 2011 Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant. During a press conference at UNC Charlotte’s Uptown Campus, Poticha announced the Charlotte Region is the recipient of a $4.9 million grant, only 1 of 28 recipients. This grant will be used to translate the CONNECT Regional Vision into an implementable plan, developed through a process that fully engages the diversity of the region’s population. The Connect Consortium is a voluntary alliance of over 100 organizations in the 14 county bi-state region from local government, for profit, not for profit and academic sectors. The Consortium is committed to sustainable, well-managed growth, a safe and healthy environment, and a strong, diverse economy.

Some of the areas recognized in the grant application was the number of partners in the consortium (110 organizations, including ULI), the efforts to work with all the various communities in a deep manner, including economic development options for the future, and the strong engagement of the neighborhoods, public and private sectors in collecting data that could be used beyond the original planning. ULI Charlotte will be an integral part of implementing this grant by assisting with the 25-30 community engagement exercises and one large region-wide Reality Checks. Click here for more information about the grant and blueprint for the regional vision.
